Measure from the floor to the underside of the rail, and from the rail to the back wall. Most hanging organisers assume a minimum 45cm hanging depth. Double-check before ordering — built-in wardrobes vary widely.
Drawer inserts sit on a shelf or the wardrobe floor. Measure the shelf depth and width before ordering. An insert that overhangs the shelf edge by more than 2–3cm is unstable under load.
Over-door pockets work best on wardrobes with full-length doors and at least 3cm clearance between the door back and the nearest clothing rail or shelf. Check the door swing does not pull the pocket into shelves when closing.
Measure internal width (left wall to right wall at shelf level), shelf depth (front edge to back wall), and rail height (floor to underside of rail). Also note whether there are fixed shelves above the rail that limit what you can hang.
Shirts and folded trousers need about 100cm of drop from the rail. Full-length dresses and coats need around 150cm. If your rail height is lower, double-hanging rails can make better use of the space for shorter items.
Slim stackable drawer inserts on the floor of the wardrobe, combined with hanging shelf dividers on the rail, tend to work well in small built-ins. They are freestanding and leave no marks, so they suit rented homes too.
Freestanding shelf units and stackable drawer inserts are the safest option for rented wardrobes as they require no fixing. Tension shelf inserts can also work if the internal walls are close enough together. Always check your tenancy agreement before making any permanent changes.
