The Storage Fit Guide

Measure clearance first

Best under-bed storage boxes UK

Under-bed storage boxes fail most often because the buyer measures the bed height at the headboard end rather than at the lowest point — often where the centre support legs sit. Measure floor to frame at the shallowest point, subtract 2cm, and use that as your maximum box height.

Measure at the lowest point

Divan beds have a solid base flush with the floor at the sides. Slatted and platform frames have legs that may be shorter at the centre than at the corners. Measure floor to frame at the shallowest point, not the tallest, and subtract 2cm for the box lid.

Wheels vs flat base

Wheeled boxes are easier to pull out but add 2–4cm to the overall height. If your clearance is tight (under 18cm), choose a flat-base fabric bag or rigid box without wheels. If you have 20cm or more, wheels are worth it for daily access.

Rigid boxes vs fabric bags

Rigid plastic boxes protect contents from dust and compression, and stack if you have multiple. Fabric bags compress to fit irregular spaces and fold flat when empty. For damp or draughty floors, a rigid box with a fitted lid is the better choice.

FAQ

How do I measure under-bed clearance correctly?

Lie a ruler or tape measure flat on the floor and slide it under the bed until it touches the frame. Measure the height at that contact point. Repeat at several positions — centre, sides and foot end — and use the smallest reading as your maximum usable height. Subtract 2cm for the box lid or bag zip.

What height do under-bed storage boxes come in?

Most fabric under-bed bags are 15–20cm tall. Rigid plastic boxes typically run 14–19cm. Some specialist low-profile options are available at 10–13cm for very low divan and platform beds. Always check the listed height including any lid or handles, not just the body of the box.

Will under-bed storage work with a divan bed?

Most divan beds sit flush with the floor on at least two sides, leaving only 5–10cm of clearance. Standard under-bed boxes will not fit. Look for very low-profile flat bags (under 8cm when packed) or consider a divan with built-in ottoman drawers instead.

How much can I store in under-bed boxes?

A standard king-size bed frame (150×200cm) with 18cm of clearance gives roughly 300–350 litres of usable under-bed volume. Two 60–80L rigid boxes cover most of that and are a manageable size to pull in and out. Use one side for seasonal clothing and one for bedding.
