Match the fixing to the surface
Smooth tile takes adhesive strips well. Painted plaster often does not — the adhesive can pull paint when removed. Over-door hooks avoid the surface question entirely and work on almost any door of the right thickness. Freestanding units involve no fixing at all, which makes them the lowest-risk option in any rented room.

Understand door clearance for over-door products
Over-door racks hang from the top of the door. Measure the gap between the door top and the frame — most over-door hooks need at least 2–3cm of clearance. Also check that the rack depth does not catch the door frame, adjacent wall or radiator when the door swings fully open.

Plan for removal before you install
Adhesive products vary widely in how cleanly they remove. Command-branded strips are designed for clean removal but have listed load limits that must not be exceeded. Generic adhesive pads often leave residue or pull paint, especially on older walls. When in doubt, choose over-door, tension or freestanding storage instead.
